mmm, not so much

what i don't appreciate about living here....

so, last weekend it started snowing and it didn't appear to be anything out of the ordinary. i wasn't worried because, hey, it was the weekend and i didn't have anywhere to be. then it didn't seem to be stopping and i had to be at work monday morning so i started to work up an ulcer because, i won't lie, i HATE driving in snow. brian looked up the weather forecast and it said only a quarter of an inch was expected so i chillaxed for a bit....that is, until i looked outside an hour later and we were already at 2 inches (quarter of an inch? ha). by the time we went to bed, my car had a good 8 inches on it. i decided to take the bus to work the next morning because A). digging my car out didn't sound that appealing and B). the tires on my car seem to forget how to be tires when they are in the snow- they just don't work. so, i trudged my way to the bus stop and patiently waited for the bus to arrive. i made it to work and was doing my thing when i looked up and almost had a heart attack. um, weren't there shops across the street? where did they go? wasn't there a street out there? i sure couldn't see it. all i could see: millions of whirlwinds of snow. it went on forever. my shift was up so i went out to catch the bus and upon immediately opening the door to leave i was greeted with a wall of snow at the door. not happy about this discovery, by the way. i walk a block to the bus stop only to arrive and see my bus drive by me with an 'out of service' sign on the front. not happy about this, either, but i still have some hope that that wasn't MY bus because they can't stop the bus service right? i mean, people are depending on them! then my phone rings and it's brian telling me he's heard they've stopped running the buses and that they've closed I-70 AND dillon dam road AND swan lake road. that my friends, is a complete list of the only roads that take me home. so, i understandably started crying and wondering why on earth i was so eager to move back to colorado. so, i trudge back to Dr. Cook's office and Dr. Cook is quick to invite me and my also stranded co-worker to go to his house. though grateful for a nice, warm house to go to, we're not amused that we can't go home to our husbands. we spend the evening playing with his kids while checking the road conditions intermittenly during the game of LIFE. they finally open swan lake road. thank you county government for opening the most mountainous, winding, and dangerous road of the three. needless to say, we had a slumber party at our bosses house.

sure, it's a fun story now but i've learned a few lessons:

1). 1/4 of an inch is weatherman-code-talk for full-blown blizzard

2). always pack an overnight bag whenever it's snowing outside

3). when people tell you that the roads are hardly ever bad here because getting people up here and home again is this county's livelihood, just don't listen and always prepare for the worst.

p.s. that picture doesn't even do this storm justice but it was the only one i could find.
